Are you an IT worker or a software developer?

January 19th, 2010 by Kevin | Posted under development.

IT Worker Software Developer
Works 9-5 in an organization. Works 9-5 in an organization. Then goes home and works on personal projects.
Complains about his/her job but still continues working there. Perhaps will get similar position at other workplace. Will work only till enthusiastic about the work being done. No scarcity of jobs.
Only tries to learn from working on projects at organization. Believe in learning to score points. Constantly improves by learning new tools, techinques and reading books, blogs.
Majority end up in IT because of the pay and not the motivation. Highly motivated to improve themselves and the entire software development process.
Some write personal blogs about why their jobs suck. Writes blogs about experiences to help other developers.
Can grow into a software developer if motivated Can never degrade to an IT worker
Sparse knowledge but show off to managers. Highly knowledgible but most are very humble.

Although I am an IT worker.. but that’s the truth!! Well said!

I have been an IT worker as well. Trying to grow into a developer. A good developer has worked in the trenches and knows a lot about the application side as well. Reading and writing lots and lots of code is what will make us better developers.

I agree one cannot be a software developer if he does not have enough motivation and dedication. The only thing he will remain is an IT Worker

True Shiva, most engineers in the IT industry work for the money. The dedication is missing.

I Accept !. I am an IT worker.
But there are lots of factors which forces you to remain an IT worker.
Those factors ties you whenever you strive to become a good software developer.
Its sort of eternal journey as an IT Worker with lots of social and moral responsibilities which is necessary to put the life on the roll and thus we are a social animal.

    Pratik,
I suppose it is our choice to be an IT worker or grow into a software developer. However, whether it is the IT field or any other profession, only those people who strive to grow and improve over themselves can achieve success. So an IT worker will remain mediocre because he/she does what is expected and nothing more while a software developer will naturally achieve success because he/she always looks to improve.
