Do I still love programming? The answer is YES

January 7th, 2010 by Kevin | Posted under development.

ProgrammingIt’s been six years since I have been involved in one form of software development or another. Most of this software development has involved a lot of programming. So after six years, the question I had to ask myself is do I still enjoy programming?

The answer still is a yes. I still enjoy programming because it is one of the rare fields of work that is not monotonous as compared to many other types of jobs. Programming is a field which is based on innovative thinking. It involves thinking abstractly about a problem and using the tools available to map the solution from the problem space to the real world.

I still enjoy programming because it takes a constant learning to keep yourself updated not just with the new technologies but with also old, well tested methodologies which you do not know about. The software field is based on knowledge and for those who want to constantly upgrade their knowledge, it provides a great opportunity. Online and offline resources abound in aplenty for programming.

There is a range of programming languages that one can learn. In fact, the list sometimes seems endless with a new programming language popping up every now and then. The latest being the Go programming language. Programming consists of being given some of the best tools available to you with virtually no constraints of cost as many of the best ones are open source and freely available. A list of programming languages can be found here.

Should people try to get a job as a programmer? Yes, they should if they have a drive towards solving problems analytically not just for the money involved. Programming jobs still have higher pay packages than many other fields. And with the information technology domain just increasing at a rapid pace, this will continue to be so. IT also converges into the other domains because of this increasing dependency of computerization and finding solutions of problems using computers.

Of course care has to be taken to select a job which will provide you the satisfaction of getting the programming work that you want. If you work for an organization where you hardly get to work on innovative stuff and just end up on maintenance projects, you may feel programming as monotonous just like any other field. But then maybe if you find it so, it’s time to think about your priorities and move ahead (You should read Lucky to be a programmer).

You are quite right Netchunks. Programming is quite enjoyable and we programmers sure love it. It’s quite fine to not be a programmer but being one just for money is not good.
